غالبا ما هو أصل الكلمة والحقيقة أنها تعود الى الانجليزي” جون مونتاغو

التهام طعامه بطريقة عملية تناسب ظروفه وذلك بوضع قطع اللحم بين شريحتي خبز.
وبذلك كان جون ساندويتش ينهمك في تناول طعامه دون الاضطرار الى مفارقة محل عمله.
