الخنافس تنتمي لطائفة الحشرات وتصنف علميا برتبة coleoptera ويعني غمدية الأجنحة أو مغمدات الأجنحة.
أنواعها المعرفة، كثيرة جدا، تصل 350000، إذ أن 40%من الحشرات المعرفة، هي خنافس، وبعبارة أخرى ،هي أكثر الأنواع ،التي تم وصفها وتعريفها، في مملكة الحيوان بنسبة تقارب 25% من أشكال الحياة المعرفة ،إذ تقدر الأنواع المعروفة ،والغير معروفة، بأعداد، تتراوح بين 5-8 مليون نوع.
